2. Which Fabric do I need?

SoftTouch Odyssey

Very much our flagship product, this really is a top permanent outdoor solution for metal and composite airframes. We have examples with 18 years+ in operation. Waterproof, non breathable but very tough and UV resistant, not as compact as other solutions when folded away but this is not a touring cover. SoftTouch Odyssey features a fully integrated soft lining.

Stratus Pro

A great outdoor solution for your aircraft. Fully breathable and water repellent it has the strength and performance needed for 24/7 outdoor storage. Glazed areas are lined with a soft Polyester lining to protect your windshield. Stratus Pro can and should be cleaned carefully to instructions and waterproofed every 3-5 years. Long lasting – we have examples still out there 14 years later.

Stratus Plus

Similar to Stratus Pro but lighter in construction and so is offered as a longer term touring solution. This is not a choice for permanent use outside because of its lighter construction.

It folds up smaller than Stratus Pro and offers a slight reduction in stowage space and weight. Water repellent and fully breathable, its ideal for weeks and even months at a time outside while touring or if you are temporarily pushed out of the hanger. Glazed areas are lined with a soft Polyester lining to protect your windshield.

Protech 90

These covers are completely focused on indoor/hanger use, so all fastenings are geared towards speed, light weight and ease of installation. Great for keeping bird and insect mess off your lovely clean airframe. Peached surface is kind to the surface, breathable and water repellent and very compact when folded away.

Stratus

Stratus is perfect for those who need an easy throw on super light weight touring cover that performs for short periods outside. Its there to keep the sun out and the showers out of the cockpit area. Compact and lightweight are its main qualities, a gentle “peached” surface protects the glazed areas from chaffing.

3. Complete the Fitting Guide

Aerials are often overlooked by owners when ordering covers and it’s the most commonly adjusted item on a cover after you receive it and fit it for the first time. Of course it is not a problem as we simply take the cover back, adjust it to your requirements and send it back to you.

But all this takes time and effort and a small extra cost, so to avoid this situation a little diligence at the early stages reaps rewards. The PDF has illustrations of a typical aircraft, High Wing, Low Wing, Twin or single the principles remain the same; we establish a datum and measure from it to the Item (Transponder & Com Aerials, Temp Probes, GPS Antennae, Static Wicks, ELT, Pitot, Tank Breather etc.) along the surface of the aircraft.

Often more than one measurement is required to place the item in three dimensional space so we combine it’s longitudinal value with its Lateral value (taken from the fuselage centreline or wing root.

It is worth noting we have many of the standard points already logged on our patterns but these days there are so many additions such as ELT’s and multiple GPS antennae that we cannot account for them.

The final area worth bearing in mind are cover straps: (almost) every cover needs strapping on to an airframe and these pass underneath the fuselage, wings and tailplane, more often than not they miss Transponder antennae, Pitots and belly mounted ADF Sensors but they can be worth noting.

4. Cover Care

Buying a new cover is all well and good but with a little care
they can maintain their performance and look good for longer too!

Cleaning With Ultramar Shampoo

In time your cover will become generally dirty and contaminated. It is essential that WeatherMax is cleaned properly to remove soiling and reduce the chance of any algae build up or mildew. For regular cleaning we recommend using Ultramar Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo. It is easy and safe to use and has been specifically developed for regular use to remove dirt, algae and fungi.

First wet out the cloth with fresh water. The shampoo is ready mixed. Apply the shampoo directly on to the cloth and rub in with a soft brush to soak the cloth. Ideally use the Ultramar soft brush. Allow the product to work for 20 minutes and then rinse with plenty of fresh water and using the brush. In cases of heavy and persistent contamination repeat the above. Allow cover to dry completely and then reproof with Ultramar Sprayhood & Tent Protector to restore water repellency and protect against contamination.

Cleaning With Ultramar Power Cleaner

In case of very heavy contamination with deeply absorbed algae stains and mildew spots, we recommend using Ultramar Power Cleaner. The power cleaner is ready mixed. Apply the power cleaner directly on to the affected area and rub in with a soft brush to soak the cloth. Allow the product to work for one hour. If the stains remain reapply the power cleaner and brush again. Leave and repeat until the stains disappear. This may take several hours. Then brush with plenty of fresh water and rinse thoroughly. Allow the cover to dry completely and then reproof with Ultramar Sprayhood & Tent Protector to restore water repellency and protect against contamination.

Ultramar Power Cleaner should only be used to remove very heavy contamination and staining that cannot otherwise be removed with Ultramar Sprayhood and Tent Shampoo. It should not be used alone as your regular cleaner.

Ultramar Power Cleaner contains cleaning and bleaching agents. Do not use Ultramar Power Cleaner on nylon threads or leave in contact with aluminum fittings. Rinse immediately with fresh water if necessary.

Protecting With Ultramar Protector

The Ultramar Sprayhood & Tent Protector has been specifically developed to impregnate your cover to provide outstanding water repellency and protection against contamination from dirt, algae and mildew. The cover must be both clean and dry. The protector is easy and safe to use and is ready mixed. Apply the protector directly on to the cover with a soft brush to get an even coverage and work into the surface, ensuring the fabric, seams, stitching, zippers and detailing are well impregnated. Alternatively apply the protector with the Ultramar Fine Sprayer. We also recommend treating the inside of the cover for maximum protection. Leave the cover to dry.

The protector is water based but avoid application or splashing to windows, deck and other surfaces etc. Wipe away any splashes with a damp cloth and rinse with fresh water. Any residual splashes or streaks on windows can be easily cleaned away with shampoo or cleaning spirit.
